Project description

The ventilation study performed is part of the Le Grand Paris Express project, aiming to create by 2030 a 205 km automatic metro lines network in the Île-de-France region, connecting thereby the region's territories and desaturating the existing transports. The ventilation studied apply to the red line of the network.

An execution study of the relief wells was conducted by calculating the pressure levels at the landing doors during passing trains for multiple configurations. It allowed to recommend an optimal set up of the wells.

Simulations of scenarios implying a fire on rolling stock stopped in the tunnel allowed to determine temperatures from the station's platform to the ceiling. Design recommendations were made for the facades regarding temperature resistance and protection against smoke. 

Modeling the section and simulating the smoke extraction according to the location of the fire allowed to establish the dimensions of the system and to recommend possible optimizations regarding scenarios.

A pre-dimensionning study of the comfort ventilation was conducted in order for it to limit the temperature elevation in the tunnel with air renewal.


Several studies were conducted:

  • Execution study of relief wells

Calculations of pressure levels at the location of the relief wells for multiple configurations. Scenarios comparison and recommendation of the best compromise.

  • Study of temperatures at the station facades

3D modeling and simulations with FDS Fire Dynamic Simulator. Analysis of the temperatures on the tunnel's facades and of the smoke propagation. Illustrations. Recommendations for the temperature resistance and protection against smoke.

  • Preliminary dimensioning of the ventilation/smoke extraction system

Simulation of the temperature field depending on the distance between the wells. Definition of the specifications of the ventilation wells and accelerators for each segment.

  • Pre-dimensionning of the comfort ventilation

Characterization of the rolling stock, line employment, tunnel and ventilation systems dimensions. Study of the tunnel temperature evolution on a typical day.
