Project Description

The cities of Vicques and Courroux were strongly affected during a flooding episode on the 9th of August 2007. A common plan for flood protection and the Scheulte river revitalisation was therefore engaged.

The study zone hydrology was analyzed on the base of the regional study on floodings and using flowrate measurements.

On this basis, and by means of identification of the various processes and the hydraulic modelling of the river and hydraulic structures (HEC-Ras and Basement 2D), the hazard maps were developed. The amount of damages were then estimated.

Finally a protection concept was proposed in order to protect the cities of Vicques and Courroux against floodings and to improve the environmental state of rivers. The list of measures includes, for example, river widening measures, upstream retention measures or rehabilitation of structures.

The Birse confluence stretch is particularly sensitive and was thus dimensioned using a 2D model.
