Thanks to the beauty of their natural attractions, the two high-altitude valley resorts of Saas-Fee and Zermatt welcome several million visitors each year. These visitors typically take the main road, which passes through picturesque Stalden, a high-altitude village with about 1,150 inhabitants. Between 8,000 and 15,000 vehicles traverse the village on a daily basis.
The challenge for the project was clear: find a way to alleviate the congestion in the village of Stalden whilst ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow. To meet this challenge, the SRP-PRA-BG group was appointed to design the village bypass. The Chinegga viaduct now forms the centrepiece of this project. Its slender structure respects the surrounding landscape and looks down at the River Vispa from a height of 60 metres.
