The International Olympic Committee has awarded the 2014 Winter Olympics to Sochi (Russia). This charming seaside resort is located by the Black Sea, in the southern Caucasus mountains. The many facilities to be built for the games—sports infrastructures, railway and road connections, ports, and train stations—are part of a vast sustainable development scheme in the region.
The IOC has commissioned five experts from BG Consulting Engineers and Algoé to follow these developments and ensure that a high standard for environmental protection and sustainable development is met, and that the facilities will be available by 2013. The fifth mission, which took place at the end of January 2009, showed that the most critical work, including road and railway tunnels, had begun.
