BG Consulting Engineers Prize 2010Published on 03.12.2010
In the interest of encouraging sustainable development, BG awards a prize each year to an EPFL master’s project in architecture that makes an outstanding contribution in this area.
The jury for the BG Consulting Engineers "Construction and Sustainable Development" Prize, consisting of Mr. Jean-Daniel Marchand (President), Prof. Bruno Marchand and Prof. Vincent Kaufmann, unanimously decided to award the prize to Ms. Berwert Asako Vera and Ms. Asami Lili Gloria for their Masters thesis:
"Fragment of a River - Suidobashi Train Station (Tokyo, Japan)"
The project addresses the problem of Tokyo’s rivers, which have been neglected for over 70 years. It aims to promote revitalisation of certain rivers – in particular the one next to the Suidobashi Train Station – through interventions that will make them visible and available for strolls along the banks or boating on the water. The idea is to increase public awareness of both the potential of these urban watercourses and the water pollution affecting them.
This is a previously unaddressed and very contemporary issue that puts the ecological problems of a large urban area back on the agenda and fits nicely into the sustainable development context.
The award was presented at the EPFL Graduation Day on October 9, 2010 by Mr. Laurent Vulliet, an EPFL professor and the CEO of BG Consulting Engineers, and Prof. Bruno Marchand, who heads the EPFL’s Institute of Architecture.
