Swiss Tunnel Congress: a hard-working new generation

Published on 04.07.2018

A closer look at the young engineers who attended this year’s Swiss Tunnel Congress, which took place in Lucerne from 13 to 15 June 2018. Over the years, this meeting of specialists in subterranean construction has become a key international event. This year, the next generation of engineers had pride of place for the first time and were strongly encouraged to attend.

Thanks to its recognised expertise in major tunnel projects in Switzerland and abroad, BG is quite naturally one of the leading sponsors of the Swiss Tunnel Congress (STC). The event, organised by the specialist group for subterranean works (GTS), takes place at the Culture and Convention Centre in Lucerne (KKL). It attracts almost 800 participants from 15 countries and the three-day programme includes a symposium, the congress itself, an exhibition and excursions to construction sites.

Water: the key element

The theme of this year’s symposium, “Waterproofing and drainage in subterranean construction” highlighted the decisive impact of water in tunnel construction, operation, reliability and durability. The conference was organised in conjunction with the “STS Young Members”, on condition that part of the programme would appeal to attendees under the age of 35.

Swiss know-how abroad

The congress itself was devoted to presenting large tunnelling projects at the planning or implementation stage in Switzerland and a selection of projects abroad, most of which used Swiss know-how. BG also had the opportunity to talk about its close involvement in the Grand Paris Express project, presented by Nicolas Deschamps, Chief Civil Engineer at BG in Ivry-sur-Seine. His talk discussed waterproofing and geothermal testing.

On the excursions day, BG participants visited the site of the Gubrist tunnel, whose third bore will be built as part of the extension of the Zurich northern bypass. BG also had a stand at the STC exhibition and was represented by, among others, four of our Young Members, Giorgia Questi, Nicolas Kupferschmied, Sophie Minon and Christiana Meyer.
