BG Sustainable Development Prize 2018: two projects in tune with our times

Published on 27.08.2018

The graduation ceremony for the Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne (ECAL) took place on 28 June. On this occasion, BG Consulting Engineers awarded the BG Sustainable Development Prize 2018 for two remarkable projects.

BG awarded Manon Membrez for her work on the Bachelor’s in Industrial Design, entitled "7.5 litres". She had designed a solution to allow supermarkets to sell dry goods in bulk, namely 7.5 litre containers that can be filled directly at the producer’s, used for transport and display and then returned to the supplier to be cleaned and refilled. The 7.5 litre size was selected to take account of the weight of the container once filled; it was important for it to be easy to handle and weigh less than 10 kilos. The decision was also based on the ratio of length to width, which was chosen to fit perfectly on a pallet (eight across and two deep, for a total of 16 per layer).

David Loy also won a prize for his work on the Bachelor’s in Visual Communication, Graphic Design option. David’s project was particularly resonant during the heatwave of Summer 2018, as he had focused on the climate to create a piece of work called "Heat". It combines text and photos and summarises reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The idea is to raise awareness around global trends and forecasts about climate change. The work compares the current climate situation to environmental projections and solutions to remedy the problem. Photographs of the landscape from the archives of National Geographic Magazine, randomly generated by a script, punctuate the document at increasing density, demonstrating the urgency of taking action.

The judging panel, made up of Pierre Epars, CEO of BG Ingénieurs Conseils, along with Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard, Head of the Bachelor’s in Industrial Design and Vincent Jacquier, Head of the Bachelor’s in Visual Communication at ECAL, were unanimously drawn to both projects, which closely reflect current concerns and offer an intelligent response to them.
