BG is involved in the renovation and improvement of dams in India

BG Consulting Engineers had been invited to participate in the First International Dam Safety Conference – 2018, 23rd & 24th January, 2018 at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala (India), organised under the auspice of the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Government of India

Dr. Russell Michael Gunn, who is the Head of the Civil Engineering and Structures Group at BG and an Internationally recognised expert in the field of Dam Engineering, acted as Chairman of the Technical Session on "Dam Safety Management Practices" and presented a paper in collaboration with Dr. Morale Torres of iPresas, entitled "Dam Safety and Risk Analysis Benchmarking" (see document under the link). The conference attendance was nearly 650 and comprised many of India's leading dam & hydro specialists and stakeholders along with a participation from abroad including a strong Swiss delegation from Alpiq, EPFL and Hydro-Exploitation.

India has been heavily engaged over the past years in a programme of Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Projects financed by the World Bank called DRIP that consists of the Rehabilitation and Improvement of dams and associated appurtenant structures, Dam Safety Institutional Strengthening in participating States and CWC (Indian Central Water Commission) and Project Management. This ambitious programme involves nearly 200 DRIP projects with an estimated total project cost of nearly EUR 452 million. The ultimate goals of DRIP would result in restoring the full operational capacity of project dams for effective utilization of stored water and improved performance on a long-term basis with reduced risk of failure/safety incidents.

BG's experience in the field of dam engineering and working with key hydropower stakeholders in Switzerland, provides a unique combination of conception, design, build, operation, maintenance and management that are closely associated with the DRIP objectives. Dr. Gunn presented aspects of dam safety and risk analyses through the use of benchmarking that involves defining specific problem statements and requesting from the engineering community problem solutions. The scope of these studies encompasses traditional complex engineering, qualitative risk analyses and the handling of residual risks, all within the context of a well-defined managerial strategy that allows capacity-building to be acquired by the stakeholders through learning processes, training and implementation to their particular projects.

BG is proud to have made a contribution to the conference, hopefully inspiring dam and hydro stakeholders in India to embarrass the exchange of National and International know-how and experiences for the better future of mankind, in a country that is rich is human culture and diversity and where the "real need" of capturing and enhancing the power of water whilst respecting environmental and social-economic needs has never been greater than today.
